Why South Padre

Everything's bigger in Texas, including the savings

One island, one road, and a beach bar big enough to be the whole spring break.

South Padre Island is the simplest of the three Maniac cities. There's one road, one main venue, and one week that all of Texas shows up for. In 2027 it's still the most affordable way to do a real spring break, no flight required for most of the state, no passport, and a beach bar built for exactly this.

One island, one roadPadre Blvd runs the length of the island. Everyone ends up in the same place.
Clayton's is the whole partyThe biggest beach bar in the US, day and night, seven days straight.
No flight for most of TexasAustin, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, all a day's drive.
Cheaper than the alternativesDomestic, no passport, no exchange rate. Real Texas prices.

Clayton's, and the spots around it

One venue carries the whole week. Here's Clayton's, the only spot on the Maniac card, plus what's worth knowing for the rest of the day.

Clayton's Beach Club

The biggest beach bar in the US and home base for the week. Day parties from noon, night parties til close, and the beach stage that hosts the headline concerts, seven days straight.

South Padre spring break events

Concerts on the beach stage

Maniac runs the South Padre event calendar out of Clayton's, day parties daily, headline concerts through the season.

See South Padre events

South Padre hosts spring break events, parties and concerts all March at Clayton's. Beach parties by day, DJ sets and themed nights after dark, and a concert lineup on the beach stage.

A single event ticket runs $20 to $60 at the door elsewhere. The Maniac VIP card covers every day and night party plus the concerts, all week, from $90. If you're going more than a couple nights, the card wins.

The 2026 lineup, for reference

Cardi B, Lil Wayne, Aoki, BigXtheplug and Tiësto all played the beach stage in March 2026, free with VIP. 2027 is announced in January.

Where to stay in South Padre

The hotel problem.

Some South Padre hotels and Airbnbs require guests to be 21+, or run noise rules strict enough to get a group evicted on night one. Booking blind is how people end up on Padre Blvd at 2am with nowhere to go.

  • Book student-friendlyOur partner StudentEscape blocks rooms at hotels that expect college groups. 18+ welcome.
  • Walk to Clayton'sPartner hotels sit on the beach side of Padre Blvd, minutes from the sand.
  • Card + room, one planHotel and Maniac card bundled, $20 down, on-site concierge all week.

South Padre vs Cancun

Same energy. No passport.

The real choice most Texas students weigh every year, drive to the island or fly to Mexico. Here's the straight comparison.

South Padre

  • No passport needed
  • A day's drive for most of Texas
  • 18+ gets you in the door
  • One card covers the whole week
  • No currency exchange, no international fees

Cancun

  • Flights and a passport required
  • Higher cost once flights and hotels are booked
  • Drinking age technically 18, enforcement varies
  • Pay cover at every spot separately
  • Beautiful, but most of the budget goes to travel
The smart choice: South Padre gets you a very similar beach-party week for a fraction of the travel cost, and you can drive home instead of catching a flight hungover.
Planning your South Padre trip

The timeline that actually works

Rooms and party packages get more expensive the closer March gets. Here's the order.

Fall · September to November

Decide

  • Book your hotel; rates worsen closer to March
  • Lock the group. Who's driving, who's splitting the room.
  • Get the card while it's at the lowest price. $20 down.
Winter · December to February

Book

  • Room through StudentEscape, beach side of Padre Blvd
  • Confirm who's driving; most of Texas is a day away
  • Confirm everyone in the group has a card, not “is getting one”
March · Your week

Go

  • Download your digital card
  • Check the daily lineup at Clayton's
  • Group chat for the nightly meet-up. Planning is done.

When is spring break in South Padre Island 2027?

South Padre Island's spring break week runs March 13 to 20, 2027. It's one concentrated week rather than the multi-week stretch you'll see in Panama City Beach or Fort Lauderdale, since most of Texas breaks around the same time.

Is South Padre Island spring break 18+?

Yes. Clayton's and the Maniac VIP card are open to 18+, though you'll need to be 21 to drink alcohol inside most venues.

How much does a week in South Padre cost?

Plan on $550 to $1,400 or more per person for the week, depending on your room split and how much you spend beyond the card. The Maniac card is the one line item that doesn't go up if you go out every night.

What does the Maniac VIP card include in South Padre?

Free entry to Clayton's day parties, every night party, and every concert on the beach stage, all week, from $90 with a $20 down payment plan.

Where should I stay in South Padre Island?

Book through our partner StudentEscape for hotels that expect spring breakers and sit a walk from Clayton's, rather than risking a 21+ or no-guest policy on your own.

How do I get around South Padre Island?

Walk it if you're staying central, or use the Wave Shuttle, a golf cart, or Uber for the rest of the island. It's one road, Padre Blvd, end to end.

South Padre Island or Cancun for spring break?

South Padre skips the passport, the flight, and the exchange rate for a very similar beach-party week. Most of Texas can drive there in a day.
